ToodleLoo Intermidgets!

                             Photobucket
This year has been a great last year, I have had lots of highlights and very few lowlights. I've learnt a lot and have made new friends. It's been really fun and I'll miss this year.

My highlights would definitely camp, making our sustainability movies, drama academy and speeches.
Camp was a really good memory because I tried a lot of things I wouldn't of tried a couple of years ago. I did abseiling (the small one) and water rafting. I jumped of a cliff into water and went swimming in freezing water and stayed in for a while.

Making the sustainability movies was great because I got to work with my friends and create a movie for something I'm passionate about.  It helped with team building skills and I learnt how to edit on imovie.

Drama academy has been really fun and I've had loads of fun being dudes in plays and making fun of my Dad. Its given a lot of tips for acting and I had lots of fun in performing plays as embarrassing  as they were.

Speeches has been really nerve racking and fun at the same time. I enjoy sharing my thoughts in speeches. Both years I have written about serious topics I'm passionate about. Both years I have gotten into finals and I'm hoping I might win this year. Even if I don't win its been a great experience anyway.

I have had hardly any lowlights. My only lowlights would be Homework and all the times I've been injured like the rope burn on camp, getting hit in dodge ball, kicked in soccer and feeling sick for half of the last term.

Its been a great end of my intermediate years and I'll miss everyone.
ToodleLoo Intermidgets! I'll miss you all.

Sustainibilty reflection

Sustainibility; Making sure we have the same stuff for the next generations.

Our class got into groups and made movies for the Outlook for Someday competition. We had to make a movie around sustainibilty. It could be under many different types of sustainibilty.
We made one on the environment.

Our movie was set as a news show. The topic was polution, we started of with talking about pollution then we go onto interviewing my Nana, Mr. G and Callista's grandparents.

We were trying to show that the world is changing and we want it to be the same for our children and our childrens children.

I think our movie was good, but it was a bit rushed. We were rushing in the last week to finish and edit.

We got it finished and I hope we win something and go to Auckland.

Something that I learned from this project that
I did not know before was…
Everyone had gardens and played outside all the time and the toilets were emptied every night when my Nana was young.

I learnt how to edit, and make a movie.

The part of this project that was most
challenging for me was…

Filming and editing so it was ready on time.

The part of this project I found most rewarding
was…

When it was finished and ready on time. All the stress went away.

The thing I need to improve on the most is…

Timing and planning better.

The thing I found that I am really good at is…

Editing the movie, clipping and importing.

If I had to do another Outlook for Someday
movie, the things I would do differently are:

Time a bit better. Film ealier so we could spend more time editing.

Sustaniblity Reflection

What was the potential problem or current problem?
The problem is that the world may suck for future generations if we don't clean up our act and stop poluting and wasting resources.

What is YOUR message?
That we need to all help and stop polluting and use our resources better. We need to clean up and take better care.

What is the purpose of your message?
Do get people to realize the consequences of our actions. And to make them want to help.

Who is your message for/who is your audience?
The people who will be able to make a bigger difference like the government and people in power.

What will YOUR movie say to your audience?
We need to stop polluting. New Zealand was a different place environment wise, and it was better.

What emotions do you want your movie to conjure up? (for your audience)
Realization, sadness, determination.

What type of film did you make?
A serious film. That tries to send a message.

Baby Otis

Wednesday 8th August, the day Baby Otis was born.

At around 1:30 I woke up hearing the sliding door opening and closing, it was dad.
I was starting to get a bit suspitous. Dad came into my room after around another 10 minutes, Dad came in and crouched  down by my bed.

"Hey Shannon, how are you doing?" Dad said to me. Mel started to wake up now (she stayed the night.)
"Er.. I'm fine" I relpied extremely tired.
"Yeah so ah... We're heading into hospital now"
"Oh... Wait, what? Penelope's in labour?!"
"Yeah, her water broke around 10 so were about 4 hours in"
"Oh... Yay!" I said and hugged Dad.

After Dad and Penelope left I got no sleep.... At all.

At school I waited for Callista to get to school, she wanted me to tell her when Penelope was in labour.
Callista arrived with Bex I ran up to them and said "Hey so you know how I got no sleep?"
"Yeah..." Callista said.
"Well yeah dad came in about 1:30 and said how are you? We're heading into hospital now so yeah" I said calmly.
"Ahh YAY" they both hugged me and we walked back to class.

For the whole day I had my phone on loud and was checking it every 5minutes. Then the we went outside to play a game. When we came back I checked my phone and saw a voice message from Dad and one message.

I looked at Callista and Mel.
"There's a voice message" I said excited.
"The moment of truth..." Callista says.
I dial the number and put my phone to my ear, Mel and Callista tell everyone to be quiet and they all stare at me as I wait and pace around.
"Hey Shannon, I thought you'd have your phone on you but... Otis William O'Carroll was born at 11:35 weighing 8 pounds and 1 ounce" I hung up and turned to everyone and smiled.
Mel and Callista jump on me and hug me while I smile and laugh. Most people are confused so I say "I have a baby brother!"
Ms. T comes in the back to see whats happening and she see's me smiling.
"Has he been born" I nod and she gives me a hug.

I also see that the message was a picture of Otis, it takes me awhile to get the photo up but after drama I show everyone and they all say he's cute.

I see Otis later that day.

Snorkling In Fiji

I had always wanted to go snorkling (properly). In deep water where there is actually fish, not just murky water. When I went to Fiji I got that chance, twice. The first time was probably the best.

We took a boat ride from Denarau (where we were staying) to a small island. That was really just a small heap of sand with a coral reef around it.

When we got there we had to jump from the boat into the water. I was slightly scared, but mostly excited. The water rushed around me and I felt the cold water surround me but then it became warm because I had reached the surface.

When I got to the shallow parts I was amazed by all the little fish who were swimming around the coral caves. Some looked like they were playing tag.

One of the guys showed us what happens when you put a piece of bread in  the water, all the fish swim up and attack it basically. He gave us some bread each. I swam off and fed some fish, there was the tiniest fish about the size of a button, it was so cute and I got so close to feeding it but it got scared and swam off.

I also got scared once, because of a Parrot Fish... In my defence I had been told they have bitten peoples fingers.

I really enjoyed snorkling, it's a memory I will remember for a while.

Matariki Panels

Matariki, a cluster of stars also known as Pleiades. Matariki is also a festival that signals the nearing of the Maori new year. Do you celebrate Matariki? In my class we made Matariki panels. There are three thirds to the panels, each represents something. First New Growth, second you, and third Matariki.

For my first third (new growth) I had three koru, each different shades of green. Light green, olive green and a dark green.  I used this because the koru represents new life, so I used it to represent new growth.

For my second third (you) I had a Irish pattern that is like a weaving. It has four lines that weave into a X. Two are two shades of red, and the other two are two shades of green. The pattern represents me because I am part Irish from my Grandad. Each line is a main person in my family, Mum, Dad, Penelope (step mum) and Michael (big brother), there is also a little gold square in the middle that is my baby brother Otis (who isn't born yet.)

For my last third I had the star cluster Matariki. Seven blue stars that kind of look like eyes because Matariki translates to 'little eyes' or 'eyes of god'. I thought this was a good way to show Matariki because it has Matariki, the translation and what is looks like, all in one.

I think I did okay with making my panel. I maybe could've  cut it out better but otherwise I think I did okay.

Our protesting

So as most of you know, the government is going to bring up our class sizes, reduce our school budget and deduct SPEC. This means that next year, school won't be as good for all of this years year 7's. So teachers have been protesting and maybe even striking. Me, Callista and Ryley in my class (with and idea from Ms. T) came up with a song, it's a remake of a song 'Another Brick in a Wall' by Pink Floyd. Here are the lyrics.

Another Brick in The Wall
We don't need no crowded classrooms
We don't need no stressed out souls
No deductions of the spec rooms
Hekia leave us kids alone
Hey Hekia leave us kids alone
All in all it's just another bad decision
All in all you're just another bad politician

[chorus at end by pupils from the Fourth Form Music Class Islington Green School, London]

We don't need no crowded classrooms
We don't need no stressed out souls
No deductions of the spec rooms
Hekia leave us kids alone
Hey Hekia leave us kids alone
All in all you're just another bad politician
All in all you're just another bad politician

My thoughts on war

Definition;
War, Armed conflict between nations or states or between groups.
That is the internet and dictionarys defintion.

This is my definition;
War, somthing that ruins familys, kills innocent people, destroys citys. A horrid way to solve problems.

I really think war is the worst way to solve a problem and most of the time the resolution they come to could have been solved without all the death, pain and suffering.

We have been told that violence isn't the answer and we should talk it out. Then we hear on the news that there is some war going on in a foreign country over something like some land, I may be young and not understand completely why they are fighting but I know that there is a better way. Like maybe having a discussion about it instead of bringing out weapons and attacking each other. What will it solve? Nothing, it will most likely make the other people/person mad and then they will retaliate.

"An eye for an eye just makes the whole world blind" my translation for that, doing something bad to someone because they did something bad in the first place doesn't solve a thing, it just makes the situation worse.

Conclusion, I don't like war. I think it is the worst way to solve a problem, it just causes pain, death and suffering. I think people should negotiate or have a discussion about the problem instead of attacking each other. To put it bluntly, I find war barbaric and completely point-less.

Catch-up quote

This is a bit of a catch-up because I have missed out on A LOT of quotes, I'm sorry....
***********************************************************************************

Man knows so much and does so little.

A great quote by R. Buckminster Fuller.

What I think it means;
That even though someones knows so much, they do so little in their life. They don't act on all the thing they could do with the things they know.

-Shannon

Quote

Sorry that I haven't posted in forever, not literally but you get what I mean. Anywho I will try and do more posts.
********************************************************************************

You never know.

This quote was thought up my moi (me) even other people have probably already said this. But this is one of my favourite quotes.

What I think it means;
That you never really know, like I belive there is a possibility of things like vampires and fairys and ghosts existing because like the quote states, you never know. There could be fairys living in your back garden, a monster could actually live under your bed, those bats at the zoo, they could be vampires. You never know.

My day with my cousins and Penelope

Every year (usually around the Easter period) my cousins (Kelsi, Abbey and Phoebe) come over to my house for around 4-5 days.

So Sunday was the third day of my cousins being over here. Today we went to the zoo!!! Goig to the zoo is a tradition for us, every time they come over we always go to the zoo.

So this morning we had to get up at about 9 and get ready, we left about 10:00-10:30. We drove away to the zoo, talking on the way there. When we got there we first had a quick look at the otters and kunekune pigs. The blue penguins were not out at the moment.

We walked around the zoo for quite a while looking at the animals and going to a few talks (were the zoo-keeper talks about the animal.)

We got to the chimpanzee's and like we do almost every year, we watched the chimp talk. We love the chimp's because 1, we joke about Michael (my brother) being related to the cousins and 2, we just love the chimp's.

When we got to the baboons I did my dance that I always do, the "I like big butts and I can not lie" dance. It is a bit of a tradition ever since one year I was being silly and started dancing around singing "I like, big butts and I can not lie" because you know, baboons have big butts so I was pretending to be a baboon. It's quite silly tradition but it's fun.

Once we were done we went to the gift shop, another zoo tradition. We all get to spend $10 given to us by Penelope (my step-mum.) I brought a ostrich toy and called it Carrot. It may sound strange but I'll give you an explanation, I am called ostrich by a select few people because of my height and apparently I run like an ostrich (I don't know if I actually do or not) and I named it Carrot because I am also called O'Carrot by a couple of my friends so I connected the two and named the ostrich, Carrot.

My cousin Kelis had gotten a lucky dip and inside her lucky dip was a plastic, dung beetle. Her first reaction was "EWW!!!!, it's an ugly thing!!!" We all laughed at her. She then called the dung beetle, Henry. She grew to like Henry. We all did.

We also played at the playground for a bit being egg's. That is kinda a tradition. We went on the swings and the see-saw (I got bored because my legs were to long for the see-saw.)

And that, concluded our day out

Aotea Lagoon

On Friday I went to Aotea Lagoon with Arielle Pila and Lily Pila, (you can visit their blogs from Nga Hau Mahana.) We drove to Aotea Lagoon around two o'clock in the afternoon. We were meeting my mums friend Deb and her daughter Macy at the park.

Once we were there we basically went straight to the playground (because we are very mature.) We played around on the playground for quite awhile. I nearly fell off on of these climbing things which was about 1.5-2 meters off the ground.

Arielle, Lily, Macy and I then all went over to the picnic mat and had some afternoon tea which consisted of popcorn, girl guide biscuits, marshmallow eggs, crackers and lemonade.

We then took my dog Rose for a walk around the Lagoon which Lily and Arielle complained about how she acted like a dog all the time. I just told them that she was a dog, so of course she was going to act like a dog. When we were walking Lily and Macy started to play on one if the exercise things. So me and Arielle went and  sat down on a bench and waited.

All was well until someone walking their dog came along. Rose got pretty excited and charged off towards the dog causing me to nearly knock Arielle off the bench. The dog had finally left and Rose calmed down.

We then started walking back to the playground. When we got there we stayed for a bit longer before heading home.

Chop suey and Rewana bread!!!

Yesterday Ms. T had a whole pot of chop suey and a loaf of rewana bread. So she gave each of us a slice of rewana bread and small cup of chop suey if we wanted some.

Chop suey is a noodle dish that is in a kind of oily sauce with  bits of schnitzel in it. Rewana bread is a Maori bread that is made with a certain type of yeast that gives it a bit of a sweeter taste. For a lot of us this was quite exciting, one because it was food. Two because a lot of us had never had chop suey or rewana bread before. We also had the choice of having coconut cream with our chop suey and rewana bread.

All of the people who wanted some wrote their names on the whiteboard in a list then were called up one by one. Once we were all called up we sat down and ate while finishing our work.

I myself would have to say that the chop suey was nice, but I wasn't a huge fan of it. I really liked the rewana bread and wished there was more of it, but there wasn't. I also liked the coconut cream but it was quite sweet.

My passion

One of my passions is learning new things. I love to learn new things that are interesting to me. The things that I love to learn and hear about are history (things like the holocaust and all the wars,) animals, nature, culture, religion, traditions, myths and the problems of the world (poverty, global warming, natural and unnatural disasters.)

I remember I went through a phase of loving whales and dolphins, I still do love whales and dolphins but then I  really loved them. I was always trying to figure out ways I could help them like all the other protesters and people like green peace. I still do sometimes.

I like to go further in learning about something by if I have heard or saw something that has interested me then I tend to look up the topic more when I can.

An elephant in the garden

An elephant in the garden
Michael Morpurgo

After the bombing of Dresden, 1945, with their home and city destroyed, a mother (Mutti), teenage daughter(Elizabeth), and son(Karli) head off to refuge while facing all the obstacles in their way. This is all hard enough but they have another obstacle, an elephant called Marlene.

(This is the blurb I wrote for it for a homework task.)
I encourage people to read this book. Mainly those who like books that involve animals or books that have to do with history (even if it is fictional.) This book has a few pictures and I would say is mildly challenging for the average reader. I really liked this book because it always has the reader hooked.

The K.O. tournament

Rrrinng!!! The lunch bell rang. Every had gone silent for a second, then murmurs of excitement and nervousness broke the silence. It was time for K.O.. We gathered with the other classes, they were excited too. Once the teams were called we went onto the field. Team A was playing first, I was in Team B.

I cheered for team A. Soon their game was over, they sadly lost. Now it was team B's turn to play. We were the taggers first. People were attacking Reilly with questions, he just told them to line up. The whistle blew and the tagger and the runner started off. The taggers were switching every few seconds. Someone tapped my shoulder and I ran off to the runner but he ran through the line so I tagged someone else. This happened a few times. Then soon all of their runners had ran.

Now it was time for us to run. We lined up and waited for the whistle. The whistle blew not long after and our first person ran to the line, then the second person and the third and so on, now it was my turn. I ran away from our line and to the other line. I had a few close escapes, and lasted at least a few seconds before I made the mistake of running to far from the line and got tagged. I walked away and cheered for the rest of my team. Once we were done we all gathered around with eager looks on our faces as we waited for the score... We had lost. We were pretty disappointed about that of course.

So, overall we lost both games, but left with dignity intact. I think that even though we lost both games we still play pretty well.

Ngati Toa Domain

Hey all, This is my recount of my syndicates trip to Ngati Toa Domain. =D

On the 16 of February, Pouakai syndicate at Tawa Intermediate went on a trip to Ngati Toa Domain for a day. When I got to school every one was in crowds admiring each others  mufti. You could feel the excited vibes coming off everyone.

We gathered outside for a talk on rules and behavior, I don’t know how many people were listening because you could hear whispering coming from a few people.

We then marched off to the train station chattering, gossiping and giggling with excitement about the coming trip. I was looking behind me chattering with some friends when I looked back in front of me.... SMACK!!!. I walked straight into a road works sign, giggles erupted from my friends that were around me, I learnt my lesson then.

We continued walking to the train station and once we got there we sat down and counted off. “1,2,4,6,7,3” numbers were being said every where. It was hard to focus on what we were meant to be saying, and when. We all were advised/told to put on sunblock so we wouldn’t end up as red as a tomato.

The train finally arrived and we all piled onto the train like cattle being loaded onto a cattle truck.  Once we were on the train we all sat in seats of three. I was squashed in the middle, yay. The white noise that was muffles and shrieks of excitement were making hard to hear the person next to me. Once the train came to a stop I let out a sigh of relief. I made sure I’d left nothing behind and got up and off the stuffy train.

Once we got there we were told all about boundaries and where to put our bags, oh and how the toilets weren’t working. Yay life. Melissa, Callista, Bex, Zandrea, Nikki and I went and sat on a small rubber mat part. We had a mini shared lunch that was really only some chips and hummus Bex had brought with her. Everyone was either sitting down talking, playing on the playground or on the field playing sports. Laughter and shrieks of joy were all around us as we were just sitting down gossiping and chattering.

Finally the beach was open, most of Pouakai was now going to get changed. A range of colours was coming out of the girls bathroom. As they all had colourful togs. I walked down to the beach with my towel in hand. I laid my towel down with all of my friends stuff. I saw my dad (Mr. O’C) sitting on a log with some of his students. I walked over to them and started to talk to them.

After quite a few hours the whistle blew and it was time for us all to tidy up. Picking up rubbish and gathering bags, the boring part of the trip. Once we were all done tidying up we walked back to the train station, and waited. Once the train came we all piled in again. It wasn’t as noisy now because everyone was tired from the long day. The train finally stopped and we all hopped off the train. Most of us went back to school, but some of us left on other stations I left for home from linden train station, and that was the end of pouakai syndicate trip.

This girl is AMAZING Must watch.

I have posted this because she has written this speech and I believe all she has said is true it was said in 1992.
She is saying about her thoughts on global warming and war. It is quite shocking how much of it is true and how much it makes you think. And how little the world has changed since then. Please watch, this video amazed me.

That After something bad (rain), something good will happen (rainbows), and good will always happen (sun), It will always come around eventually (it's a circle, circling, around again, it comes around again.)
